Gear – Preferred Book and Reading Hacks / Apps – Blinkist

If you are like me, you probably have a substantial backlog of books and articles you are intending to read – someday, maybe…

Recently a very close friend shared a new app/service with me that has really been quite a gift. The app is called Blinkist, and it is a book summarization service that has audio downloads and summarized pdfs to blast through some of the best books out there. There are genres and lists broken out to subscribe to – enabling someone to blast through the top management books of 2017 in just a few days. The ‘blinks’ are typically 7-9 per book and last 1-3 minutes each – thus enabling book completion in short order.

My habit is currently set to completing 1-4 books per week, and capturing at least one action per book to take onboard. Any book summaries/notes that I take down are captured in my Evernote with the actions captured in my OmniFocus-based system. More on these tools and management processes that I use on a daily basis in a few future posts.

I’ve been using this app since July, 2017 and after 3 months – this app has held up much better than prior attempts at reading ebooks, typically via Apple’s apps on my iPad. I’ve found that Blankest gives me the essentials for the books I’m reading, although for some books that are really in need of deeper understanding and time – i’’ll start them in Blankist and then get them out on Apple’s store as I have swapped out the analog world for the digital one. Both Blinkist and the Apple Books apps have proven very beneficial when traveling.
