Jocko Willink has one of the highest rated podcasts today. He broke big when he did some work with Tim Ferris.
This Ted Talk is exceptional.
In some ways, it has prompted this march to 84.
I came across this the other night, where he oozes authenticity. I had to share this given the Memorial Day holiday. He outlines an experience in the Iraqi War where he was a SEAL commander. I had read about the event where the fratricide had happened, but have never seen the video where he recaps it viscerally.
There is a substantial lesson here for every single person reading this. Right around 5:30 into this clip, he starts to discuss how he handled the after action review was going to be handled. 6:50 into the clip – he struggles to identify the target of blame.
Blame is an incredibly weak thing to do.
Then he goes into the team dynamics of his team, and how everyone steps up. I work with a team right now that has a very similar makeup where everyone is ready to take accountability when things go sideways. It is a rare thing.
9:20 – He talks about blaming himself and taking ownership of what happened, not abdicating his command and responsibility.
A team that takes ownership of the problems, resolves the problems. His point is exceptional.
A team exists in multiple dimensions of your life. At work with your colleagues. At home with your family and loved ones. In your church. We are all a part of a team, even if the team has differing labels.
